Where our Bus is Headed

Posted on January 14th, 2010 by Paul McArdle24 Comments

This is the 7th draft. I am adopting an iterative approach to this post, utilising feedback (both internally and externally) in order that I can improve how I communicate this Vision such that it is clear and compelling. Hence, if this draft is not either, then please let me know!

Clarification

By “Vision” I am taking a looser interpretation of the word – others might interpret the following (and the associated pages all marked as “Vision”) as part of all of these:

Vision, Strategy, Goals, Objectives, etc

I have bundled all of these concepts under the broader label “where this bus is headed”, which I have adopted from the book “Good to Great”I recognise that some of the linked pages are perhaps more like “how we’re going to get where we are headed”.

Mission

I had previously posted about the Mission of the company on this page.

For added clarity (and so I can further answer the “why” question), I have moved this to its own separate post.

Vision

In terms of my Vision for where the company is headed, I have clarified this (I hope!) by providing this over several timeframes.

I have removed the dates to ensure you (the reader) focused on the general sequence of progression:

2010 (now) We are an established business that, over the past 10 years, has developed a number of software products that make Australia’s National Electricity Market understandable.  These are widely used in the market, by wholesale market participants and observers.

We have also gained experience in developing software for an electricity market internationally (Ontario), which has helped us to refine our international plans…

phase 1 Over the next 12-24 months, we will build our capacity such that it can more fully support the growth we envisage will come over the coming years.

This will entail a number of facets of capacity building – including (but not limited to):
1)  expanding and aligning our team,
2)  enhancing our processes & culture
3)  improving our brand positioning

phase 2 Our software will be used by a large & diverse range of market participants and observers in as many as 20 electricity markets around the world to gain a clear convenient and cost-effective understanding of their particular competitive electricity market.
phase 3 We have ambitions even grander than just the above – in this case, our precise destination will depend somewhat on larger developments at play in the energy sector (e.g. a move towards a low-carbon economy, and the Smart Grid). Of course we recognise that we need to “walk before we run”By arriving at the destination above, we will have positioned ourselves to capitalise on these opportunities, as they arise. If you are a person who can work with us to deliver on the above, then I would be happy to tell you more….

Please let me know if this makes sense?

Further Details

Obviously, it is possible to cascade these “Big Hairy Audacious Goals” down into progressively finer details. That’s what we have to do in order to deliver on them, obviously!  I have posted separately about some of these further details.

I don’t have the time to discuss everything (nor do I want to openly) but I do believe in sharing sufficient details to ensure that people who are aligned with our Vision can hop onboard our bus – in a variety of capacities.
